February, 2021 Northbrook, IL- Glenbrook North High School students have organized their annual food drive for Sunday, March 7th in support of the Northfield Township Food Pantry to help those in our local community who are struggling with putting enough food on their table.

An estimated 10-12% of Northbrook residents are thought to be food insecure. This number has escalated over the past 12 months as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to the start of the pandemic, 400 school age children were already receiving free or reduced cost lunches at Northbrook schools. Today, the need is even greater to help ensure that these students, younger children, unemployed and underemployed adults and vulnerable seniors are receiving adequate nutritious food.

The Student Association at Glenbrook North and the Student Association Executive Board, which includes Peter Bazianos, Lindsay Berkowitz, Jett Greene, Erin Nibeck, and Shayna Seiler, are asking all local residents who are in a position to help, to get involved. They would like everyone to go through their pantries or purchase and drop off food at the Northbrook Sunset Foods, Jewel, Mariano's on Skokie Boulevard on Sunday, March 7th 10am - 4pm.  Waterway Car Wash is accepting monetary donations until this date.  The food will be collected by the students and delivered to the Northfield Township Food Pantry for distribution to anyone in need. We are also donating to The ARK.

The most needed items include: cereal, juice boxes, canned pasta, chili, beef stew, coffee, pancake mix and syrup, skillet pasta meal starters and canned vegetables.

By addressing food insecurity and promoting adequate protein intake, we can improve the overall health and well-being of individuals and communities. This requires collaborative efforts from governments, non-governmental organizations, community-based initiatives, and individuals to create sustainable solutions and break the cycle of food insecurity. Efforts should focus on improving access to nutritious food, promoting sustainable agriculture, fostering economic opportunities, and empowering vulnerable populations. Food insecurity has profound consequences on physical health, cognitive development, and overall well-being. When individuals or households experience food insecurity, they often struggle to access an adequate and diverse range of nutritious foods, including those rich in protein. Inadequate protein intake contributes to malnutrition and its associated health consequences. Protein is essential for growth , development, and maintenance of the body's tissues, as well as for numerous physiological processes. It plays a crucial role in building and repairing muscles, producing enzymes and hormones, supporting immune function, and maintaining healthy hair, skin, and nails. Protein intake has an additional benefit of reducing feelings of hunger because it metabolizes at a slower rate than carbohydrates thereby promoting fullness. Insufficient protein intake can lead to muscle wasting, increased illness, delayed wound healing, and decreased overall health and well-being.
